I reported a number of self-slabbed silver eagles with advertised grades last night. They’re still up today. eBay just doesn’t give a damn.
I'm about ready to pull all of my listings from eBay at this point. They do absolutely nothing for me anymore. I used to find it worth my time, but now feel like I'm picking through leftovers at the tail end of a yard sale. It's simple really, they got too big for their britches, and don't feel accountable to anyone except their shareholders.
Date is way off... you would hope someone spending almost 4 figures on a coin would do a little research first and know what they're buying... eBay is getting bad for fakes, thankfully most are bad fakes which you don't even have to click to know they are fake. now what I really wish they had were coins put into pre 64 and 64-present..... would save a heck of a lot of junk scrolling.
I am terrible at detecting counterfeits; I always look at a picture of an original off Coinfacts, but not knowing anything about this date, the 5 looks off and the reverse between 6 and 9 o'clock look off.
Is the half authentic with an altered date? Fearfully, yes the half would have fooled me. But not the date.
This half is counterfeit, not altered. I'm having a hard time telling these past couple of weeks, as I broke my eyeglasses on 7/02 and have since been wearing 10 year old glasses while waiting for replacements . . . hurts both my eyes and my on-screen examination until I get the right lenses in front of me again (Tuesday, if all goes well).
That piece could have fooled me but, if I was going to pay that much money for something, I'd want it in an reputable 3rd party holder........
Date position looks way off; position of letters in AMERICA relative to each other appear off as well. eBay removed the listing.
I thought maybe it was just because I tend to be a bottom-feeder, but it looks like the number of bad fakes showing up on eBay is skyrocketing. I went through the "eBay Concierge" facility to report a repeat offender. This is a feature for "most valued buyers" (?) that gets you directly connected to a rep who is supposed to feign more interest than the standard first-line CSRs. He seemed very concerned, and promised to turn it over to the Safety department. I went back a day or so later, and the guy didn't have any active listings. Yay! I went back today, and he's got even worse listings than the ones I reported. Pretty sure a reckoning is going to come -- sooner or later someone will find a way to shine a spotlight on this that will make eBay nervous. They won't want to be known as "America's leading supplier of fraudulent collectibles".
Rest assured, it's got nothing to do with you being you. That was pretty short-lived satisfaction, huh? Methinks it's too late for them to avoid that!
