I finally took some better pictures of this 1861 Seated Dollar which I have had for many years. The close-up of the shield reveals some fine doubling on the horizontal bars of the shield which is the key marker for proof strikes of this year. This site was very helpful. It provides invaluable information on Seated Dollars: http://seateddollarvarieties.com I'll be glad to hear your opinions. Thanks,
First, I'm not all that knowledgeable about Seated Dollar proofs but took some time to study a lot of images. The square rims and the doubling make me think it's a proof. Don't trust my opinion. I do know, that's a really cool coin. Thanks for sharing.
MS 61 wouldn't be a proof. Are you saying PR-61? MS or PR I think it's a little higher than 61. If it was a 1961 I could see that, but for 1861 it gets a little wiggle room, I'll go PR-63.
The estimated total number of extant proofs for his year, is, from what I can gather, lower than the estimated extant total number of circulation strikes - all grades combined. However, in AU and better it seems to be the other way around: more proofs than circulation strikes. In true MS an 1861 circulation strike seated dollar is very rare, (and valued higher than a proof strike). I think my example is a proof based on what I have read in the link I posted, However, am not 100% sure (of course). I would welcome any other opinions.
I commented on this coin on the other forum it was posted at. A fantastic example that is most likely a proof. Congrats. I would send this to PCGS or NGC. IMO, it should be slabbed to protect the coin and confirm that it is a proof or business strike. (I think proof)
Gorgeous coin you have there! I would guess it's a proof as well but best case for you would probably be to find out it's MS IMO
Liberty area looks shady to start with. Would thing area would more defined. As far as horizontal lines on shield. I'm thinking all late stage business strikes would show that. Hoping I'm wrong. Wonderful coin. 63 whatever it is. But I'll look again
