This penny either has improperly mixed alloy or it has the roller lines.

1981 d penny has one of the two. Need to know a little more about lines.

OH WOW...I think you have a woodie...uh...a term for an improperly blended alloy which resembles woodgrain. I've never found one.

This does look like it has an improperly mixed alloy. The values tend to be in the ten dollar range for cents.

Agree with @Kentucky . Search woodies on the CT search bar. There are some jaw dropping pieces here on CT.

Yes! I love this stuff! I feel excited. I've seen the term woodie. I had this kept away.

You have what most call a woody, due to the wood grain effect it shows.
It is thought to be caused an improperly mixed metals that make up the copper
alloy used to make Cents. your coin is also the next to last year this can even happen due to change to the copper Plated Zinc Cent (Zincoln).
This is really a copper coin thing, and comes in many variations.

Not for ten dollars, maybe 5 cents at best... My average is at least 15 woodies per box; they aren't rare.

I wasn't trying to make you feel bad about value if that's how it came across; I also like the 1918 cent you found ;)
