1890 O my! Fake or altered?

Thought I was getting a decent deal from a coin lot. This Morgan weighs about right for being worn, 26.3 grams, but it still seems suspicious. A layer is peeling off revealing a cleaned finish. I've never seen this before. I thought right away this may be a fake. Then I thought it may have been a cleaned coin altered to make it appear uncleaned since most collector's dislike cleaned coins.

Looks like glue. Soak it in acetone, and see if it comes off. Pretty sure it will.

That's what I'm thinking . . . some kind of residue. At a quick glance, the coin looks real.

Okay thanks! It appears to be some tape where the adhesive ate away part of the surface giving that cleaned appearance.

Yep... That Morgan was glued into somebody’s collecting book over the course of its life.

Looks much better after using the acetone, even though it looks like someone tried to clean the bottom of it.

Acetone is a numismatist's best friend at times.
