I just recently came into lots and lots of coins. I have started searching the penny's for errors. You guys are giving me a good education, as I know zero about coins. I have separated about 10 number ten coffee cans full of quarters none of them silver. Is it really worth my time to search these coins for errors? Same question about dimes and nickels, after silver ones are removed of course. This is not a joke I really need help on this issue. Thanks so much for your past help Gil in Kentucky
My suggestion would be to get a copy of the Red Book. It doesn't have to be the most recent edition. Read about the denomination you are searching and use the price guide to get some idea of if any of your coins might be valuable. Note very well that the Red Book price guide is notoriously off of true value. Here is the web site for the Red Book. https://www.whitman.com/store/Inven...ed-Book-of-United-States-Coins---Spiral-Bound You might shop around for a lower price and even a used copy of previous editions. Amazon?
Also do a little at a time. I've been going thru a bunch of foreign coins, and it helps to do some and walk away. For me, too easy to be overwhelmed.
Penny - Singular Pennies - Plural.. Not Penny's Here are 2 good reference websites. http://www.error-ref.com And http://doubleddie.com Peace
Ask yourself, if you did not have these coins, would you be inclined to buy $25 worth of cents from the bank and search them for errors? If the answer is no, then it's likely not worth your time to search what you have once you've pulled out the silver. At one point I searched rolls of cents with my children and enjoyed the time spent, although it was not financially a good use of my time by a long shot, and I doubt it will be for anyone.
