Hi I am fairly new at collecting( about 6 months now)
I bought it at an offline auction- part of a lot.It has a counter mark.
I know its a cull but i was wondering if this looks familiar to anyone

All i know is its a Greek coin and probably B.C.

    Welcome!

Unfortunately I can't say much about this coin, not even if it is Greek or Celtic or Roman Provincial or what. From the pictures I can't tell if it is bronze or silver. The obverse looks vaguely like Athena or Roma. The reverse is "someone standing there", and there aren't many other clues to go with. Could that be a bow sticking out behind the person's back? Maybe it's Apollo. I can't make out the countermark either although the countermark looks vaguely familiar.

Maybe it will ring a bell with someone else :)

Thank you TIF. Its not silver. its bronze. I had to clean it because of the corrosion made it impossible to ID it when I got it.

Maybe we'll come up with some possibilities. Looks like a fun challenge :)

It is definitely Greek, but almost impossible to narrow it down from there.

Welcome aboard! There are a lot of very knowledgeable ancient collectors on here who can most likely help to identify your coin. Bing comes to mind right off...

Thank you. I appreciate you all welcoming me . Glad to be here

Do you think it could be Greek during Roman occupation/ clients state/province since the countermark may be a sign that Rome wanted to alter the coins themselves?

    Such as Sicily?

Could this be Egyptian? Roman provincial? the nose looks it, almost like A Snake or Ra, isis or Orisis..

If you can find the same countermark it will help you narrow down the coin.

Rough li'l critter, but yes, Greek, and the countermark is neat.

I am of course clueless. Can't tell you if it's under Roman rule or not. I suspect not, but don't know enough to say.

What does it mean when coins were countermarked like that?

It was done for a variety of reasons.

Here. This page is better than my feeble attempts at explanation.
