Picked up this kneeling fellow awhile ago. Hoping it's I.D'ed correctly. I know almost everyone has one of this type or similar so share yours! Darius II - Artaxerxes II, (420 - 375 B.C.) Persian Empire, Lydia, Anatolia AR Siglos O: Kneeling-running figure of the Great King right, bearded, crowned, dagger in right hand, bow in left hand, waist indicated, pellets on sleeves. R: Oblong incuse. Sardes (Sart, Turkey) mint 14mm 5.2g Carradice Type IV (middle) B, pl. XIV, 43; SNG Kayhan 1033; SGCV II 4683
I really want a Type I (half length holding two arrows down low to right) https://www.cngcoins.com/Coin.aspx?CoinID=43171 https://www.cngcoins.com/Coin.aspx?CoinID=227348 but will never pay the price most go for. My interest stops short of getting all the sub types, all the fractional denominations or the gold. Type II (shooting with bow string drawn and arrow above arm) Type III (with spear on shoulder and bow not drawn) Type IV (with dagger and bow not drawn)
I recently posted my newly acquired Type II, so here it is along with my Type III and Type IV: Plus, the little-known AE version:
Nice job @Mat ! These are pretty cool to have. I have several over a few denominations, but they are either of Type III or IV: Achaemenid Xerxes II to Artaxerxes II 420-375 BC AR siglos 16 mm 5.14 g Persian king running spear bow - incuse Carradice Type IIIb C pl XIV 42) Sunrise 25 Persia Achaemenid Type IV dagger quiver running Darius I to Xerxes II 455-420 BCE AR QUARTER-Siglos 1.35g 8mm Incuse rev
I've seen my type and the spear, but not the others. Didn't know there were possible sets of this coinage.
Nice @Mat ! Some pretty toning around the king dude. Man, one of those Archaemenid coins has been on my list for 3 years now...still don't have one.
The problem I see with these is the failure of many sellers to price the coins in keeping with the detail shown. I believe a coin showing full bow, crown and feet should sell for more than one with a shadow of these details. These coins are common should be cheap in ugly or partial detail grades. You will pay more for a III like TIF's or a IV like Z's. I see headless/bowless ones being offered as if they were gems. No!
