I took some pics of the new Wildman I got on Christmas Eve. When looking at the obverse starting at the 5 o'clock on over to around the 8 o'clock position (when I say 5 to 8 I mean in relation to the pic not the coin) you can see the rotated/Double die and also on the reverse start at around the 9 o'clock to the 1 o'clock position of the picture. I'll work on my pic taking skills but for now this is what I have to work with! Now on to the bigger question, the person I bought this from thought it was a 1784 1/6th Thaler from Hannover Germany (states). However, when looking at pictures othe 1/6th thaler from that time it just doesn't quite match up, here is the link http://www.welfen-muenzen.de/georg_iii.html It looks like a cross between the 1/24th thaler and the 1/6th on that page. Todd, What are all those small bumps on the surface of the coin? Are you sure this is a genuine coin?
If this were a cast coin then there wouldn't be a double die on it(to the extent that it is). You can look at the lettering and see that he coin rotated and then was struck. If it were cast it wouldn't have that sharp of detail in the lettering plus being stamped would have done away with any raised portions on the planchet. If it were to be a fake then someone took a lot of time to make a replica of a really inexpensive coin... I don't think it is a fake, I have had two different dealers look at it plus I posted the pics on the PCGS forums and so far everyone thinks it is a legit coin that is COOL!! Thanks though! Todd
The coin is Double Struck and is not a Double Die! I am unsure as to the denomination but don't think that is a 1/6th Thaler. It could possibly be a 6 Kreuzer coin! Frank
Correction I meant double struck but in my haste I put double die... thanks for the correction.... As for the denomination, on the reverse (which is shadowed on the bottom) it has the fraction 1/6 on the very bottom center as the 1/6th thaler does .... Todd
Todd, You are right! I spoke before noting the 1/6 on the coin. Thanks I found that same coin here http://www.welfen-muenzen.de/georg_iii.html but the 1/6th on that page is different from mine. The person I bought this from stated it was a German-Hanover 1/6th Thaler. I was hoping someone could nail this for sure for me so I can get some background on the coin itself. Thanks for the help! I logged in and looked around but the 1/6th thalers on the auction pages have a different set of initials under the wildman and different writing on the reverse where "Fein Silb" is on mine. Todd
