Perhaps starting to dabble in Ancients. What is a good start?

actually the way i got into ancients was by discovering uncleaned/dirty ancients, and it took a lot of research and learning on the proper tools/techniques depending on the condition you first get them in, at first i tried olive oil and distilled water but i found "dry cleaning" them to be better with metal picks, soft fine bristle toothbrush, nylon brush, brass bristle brush or certain dremel tool attachments depending how weak or strong the patina is under all the dirt/crust. many of the uncleaned lots on ebay are sometimes iffy but some are good, http://dirtyoldcoins.com/ is a good place to start

Of course, you should consider also that coins were issued by many cultures other than the Greeks and the Romans:
