I recently picked up 2 Thomas Jefferson coins out of change and noticed when placing hte coins ontop of each other the edge lettering does not line up. I know some of the edge lettering is upside down on the coins as a die variation but I thought but I thought the lettering should line up.
Define "does not line up". Do you mean the edge lettering is not in the same location on each coin? In other words, 'In God We Trust' starts at 12:00 on one coin and starts at 4:00 on the other. Is that what you mean? Or do you mean the spacing between letters and numerals is different?
Sorry, On one of the coins GOD is at 12 o'clock and on the other GOD is about 5 o'clock. Other than that they look normal.
That is normal for business strikes. After the coins coins are struck with a smooth edge they are run through the edge lettering machine. The orientation is random (i.e., half of the coins have edge lettering that is "right-side-up" and half have edge lettering that is "upside-down"). The exact location of the edge lettering around the edge is also random. Proof Presidential dollars are minted differently. They are minted with a split collar that contains the edge lettering so the edge lettering should be the same (orientation and location) on every coin.
