I need to order several Air-Tites for a collection of coins. The coins are 28.5 mm. Would I need to use the 28mm size or the 29mm? If I had one in my current inventory I could try out first, but I don't. I have other sizes of Air-tites but don't have any coins that are .5 smaller or larger to test. I think I would need the smaller size would be better, but I need to order 28 capsules and need to be sure.
I left out the part that I would be using the ones with the rubber rings, not direct fit. My thinking is that I would have some stretch in the rubber on the smaller size and a tighter fit, vs. a gap with the larger. The question would be, will it stretch .5mm without bunching up? I usually go with the closest size, but never ran across one in the middle. Guess I have to buy one of each and test before ordering the rest.
When I use the ones with the rings, I go for the size smaller. Otherwise, you'll have a rattler. The fit can be tight, though. So, if my coin's diameter size is 28.5mm, I go for 28mm rings. I think that Valley Coin.com has non-standard size rings that fit the smaller "T" size capsules. But with 28.5, I think you might have to go with the "H" size airtites. I don't know. I put coins with a diameter of 22.86mm in 22mm rings that go into T-size airtites. I also put coins with a 26.5mm diameter into non-standard 26mm rings that fit into T-size airtites.
You need the 28mm ring. It has enough give to fit a 28.5 coin. In a 29mm ring, your coin will slide around.
That is what I thought. The 28mm should work perfect. I do wish I could get it in the larger "I" size which is 2" diameter. I want to put the coins in an Eagle binder which holds the square 2X2 capsules but the round one also fit. I might look at using the square capsules if I can get the 28mm fit. Thanks Mike
I used to have a bunch of the Eagle pages, but the plastic became brittle and eventually fell apart. If you're using Air-Tite capsules, I recommend the Air-Tite pages. They're not expensive (about $3 per) and are a better way to store Air-Tites. Here are pages for H size and I size capsules:
30.6mm half-dollars fit in the "30mm" ring-type airtites. It's snug, but no problem. That's how I store my complete sets of Walker and Franklin half-dollars. So I expect your 28.5mm coin would likewise fit a "28mm" ring-type
Makes it easy to view 'em. But it's a bit inconvenient if you add/remove a coin, and then re-arrange the whole set. Anyway, for storage I generally prefer the airtite tubes. Easier to add/remove coins. And for my more valuable coins, the tubes fit my safe deposit box.
I believe you can fit a 28mm coin in an "I" size airtite capsule. All you need is the correct size ring. (Yes, you can separately order the rings only -- about $5 for 50.) For example, a 30mm ring (for a half dollar) fits nicely in a 38mm "I" size ring capsule (for a Morgan dollar). Not that I'd put a half dollar in a dollar-size capsule. But it's do-able. Likewise, I expect a 28mm "H" size ring would fit a 38mm "I" size ring capsule. But I haven't tried it, so can't speak from experience.
I looked at that option last night. I already have a binder and the pages are inexpensive. I am working on a presentation project and these pages will work. I like the fact that one can order different sized pages for the various sized capsules. Thanks
That made me recall a capsule that I had which contained a coin I got from the Russian Federation a few years back. The rings are segmented so that one could use one insert to fit several sizes of coins. The rings are attached to each other and you just snap out the size you need. Unfortunately it's 2 1/4" and too large. I have never seen one like it before or since.
Lighthouse makes something similar. It can hold coins from 21mm to 62mm. Outside diameter is 67mm (2-5/8"). https://www.onfireguy.com/lighthouse-caps-xl-21-62mm-black-ring-large-coin-capsules-10-pack/
Lighthouse also makes a bigger one, for coins 29mm to 76mm: https://www.lighthouse.us/large-coin-capsules-caps-xl76-for-coins-29-76-mm-in-diameter-2-pack.html
