Due to a bad description and bad pics I managed to buy this dimple free coin for a song.

Found the correct description on PtolemyCoin project from Daniel Wolf:

Please show your Ptolemy diobols , thanks

Nice coin! Not the usual Zeus Ammon :)

I don't know the denomination names of the pound of Ptolemy bronzes in my collection. Maybe some are diobols? Is there anything suggesting these coins were contemporarily called diobols (or obols or octobols or whatever) or is it just a handy modern classification?

Edited before posting: Looks like the PtolemyBronze website has an article on metrology so I guess I could read that :D

I thought you were the expert on these bronze Ptolomy coins TIF :)
I know you own a laaarge collection of them.
You probably own a couple of these diobols next to your Ptolomey drachma hockeypucks

I bought this one because it has no dimples / central holes used to hold the planchets when flattened by a lathe machine. After that the planchets were struck into coins.

Heres a later diobol with the common central holes:

Very nice coins @Andres2 and @Clavdivs I have several diobols of Ptolemy II, the two below are my more recent acquisitions. I really like these coins for their nice size and depiction of Zeus.

My Ptolemy is quite worn. I have read and searched the Ptolemy Coin project for days trying to find out which Ptolemy it is, but to no avail. At this point they all look the same to me :wideyed: Maybe you guys can help?
    27 x 28 mm, 13.95 g
Obverse: Diademed head of Zeus-Ammon right
Reverse: ΠΤΟΛΕΜΑΙΟΥ ΒΑΣΙΛΕΩΣ Ptolemaic Eagle standing left on thunderbolt, monogram AP (?) or MI (?) before and there could have been also a monogram above.

Fantastic capture @Andres2 ! Super to know your coins, then while away a super misattributed deal! Congrats!

NONE of mine are dimple free, even the small Chalkous that I have. Amazing.

I have a Ptolemy II but it is an Obol, instead of yoor Diobol:

And, here is that small Chalkous WITH a dimple that I mentioned:

I'm with @TIF, no idea about the "denominations." Guess I need to read the article too.
