Ok- finally! Here's the much anticipated ( ) list of the goodies I've found while working at the bank. Let me just preface this list by saying that if I do find anything that's valuable and I know who brought it in I always ask the owner if they want it back. Most of what I've found is junk silver, but there's been some pretty good stuff too. This is by no means a complete list- that'd take days to type! Ok- here goes... Cents: It's not much of an exaggeration to say that I've found thousands of wheat cents. I've found as much as $18 dollars worth in one day. I have found pretty much a complete date-and-mintmark set of Lincolns, minus only the 1909-S, 1909-SVDB, 1914-D, 1922 Plain, and the 1931-S. I do have a 1891 Indian Head cent and a 1972 DDO. It's not one of the more spectactular ones, you need a magnifying glass to see the doubling, but it's there. One of my co-workers found a beat up 1898 Flying Eagle cent. One dateless, nearly worn slick 2-cent piece! A handful of Buffalo nickels, one with a partial date and two with actual readable dates. I'm only missing the 1942-D for a date-and-mintmark set of wartime Jefferson nickels. For some reason the D's are few and far between. The 1943's I have outnumber the rest of the dates 2-1, but no 3/2's... Four Mercury dimes, and a nearly complete date set of silver Roosevelt dimes. I'm only missing a 1949 and a 1955. I also once found a Seated Liberty dime that I returned to its owner. The guy said "I've been looking for that- it's my golf marker!" I have half a date set of silver Washington quarters, missing most of the early dates. I do have a pretty decent 1935-S. Three Franklin halves, including one 1949 that someone cleaned almost to the point of oblivion. I have a complete set plus some of silver Kennedys, there are as many 64's as the rest of the dates combined. One 1979-P Near Date SBA dollar, one Morgan dollar (returned to owner), and one 1922 Peace dollar (owner let me keep!). Now the foreign coins- I have coins from 34 different nations. I'll list them if anyone's interested- here's the highlights. A partial set of Irish euros- 10 euro cent, 5 cent, 2 cent, and several 1 cent. Lots of UK coins, including new pence, old pence, half penny. German euros, Finnish euros, Italian euros. It still amazes me that I've found coins from every continent (except Antartica of course... ). The coins from Liberia, South Africa, and Zambia I'm especially proud of. Lots of cool Canadian stuff: two Loonies, one Twonie, several Centennial quarters and cents, several silver quarters and dimes, half of the 1999 Calendar series, half of the 2000 Millenium series, a Vol dime, a Golden Jubilee dime and cent, and a 1928 cent. Also an old German game token, and what I think is an old Indianapolis bus token. That's about it- hope this didn't get too long winded for everyone! Rachel
Now that's a list By the way Kyra - don't forget - if you find any Netherlands ducats - I didn't mean to cash those in. Please return those to me
Very nice list. I had a buddy who was the head teller at a Bank of America here in town. He used to try to return stuff and was always amazed when people would say, "I don't care. Just give me the money.". Frankly, it amazes me too. He used to give my card to people and tell them to call me that I'd pay them more for the coins, especially silver. No one ever called.
Great list Thanks for taking the time to share what a nice list. Hopefully you found coins and not my kids (see user id). And if by some miracle you find any Australian coins no one wants, I am always here. Richard
As something of a traveler, I'd love to know what countries you've collected. I too have found Liberian and South African coins (two of each) here in the United States. Wonder why those countries turn up? It's not like there is any major reason for exchange of their currencies.
kyra, that list is quite impressive. how do you swap out the foriegn stuff, just toss in a nickel per or something?
Oops, just realized the typo on the Flying Eagle cent- it's of course an 1858.... That's what I get for not proofreading-- thanks RBM86! As far as the foreign coins, I can just snag them- no exchange needed. They're not good for anything except for taking up space, so we can do whatever we want with them. Here's the foreign countries I've found, no particular order: France, China, Austria, Liberia, Germany, Cayman Islands, Bermuda (love those!), Peru, Costa Rica, the UK, Greece, Italy, The Bahamas, Jamaica, Mexico, Poland, Canada, The Netherlands, Barbados, Australia (love those too!), the Philippenes, Panama, South Africa, Zambia, Finland, Aruba, Korea, Malaysia, Spain, El Salvador, Singapore, Argentina, and "Helvetica"- someone refresh my memory- who is that? Oh yeah, I almost forgot the Proof coins I've found. There's a 1983 dime, a 1980-something half dollar (don't have it in front of me at the moment), and a Georgia and Ohio quarter! Sorry GDJMSP- no ducats here! Rachel
Helvetica is Switzerland. I used to know what Helvetica meant, but then I hit 30 and my memory went (and it's the second thing to go).
Smiles Glad to see your appreciation for the Australian coinage. all the Koalas, Kangaroos and Kookaburras thank you. Richard
Thanks KLJ- I thought it was Switzerland, but I'm approaching the big 30 myself and the memory is going too! The eyes went first, then the gray hair, what's next? Hey Richard- the Aussie coinage is some of my favorites. I have a bunch of it, some from work and some from a friend that lives in Sydney. He sends me some stuff from time to time. Rachel
GDJMSP & Crystalk, You would deprive poor Kyra from keeing a couple of old, outdated ducats...? Shame on the two of you. You should let Kyra keep them since you can't spend them anyway. catman
Yes he has. I haven't managed it yet... but i figure UK vending machines should accept gold sovereigns as 50p pieces. But since that's only half of the face value, i doubt i'll be inclined to dispense with a sovereign in that manner.
