Hallo gentlemen, I was doing some reading yesterday about this 1801 dime in my collection. According to Coin Facts there were only 2 varieties minted that year (JR-1 and 2). JR-1 is described as scarce, while JR2 is considered rare. I also found yesterday the old sales ticket for this coin, where it is described as JR-2. Naturally i got quite excited. Can i please ask the experts to confirm whether this is JR1 or JR2?. I would really appreciate that, since i have no other means to check on the variety. Please let me know also your opinions on grade, condition etc. The coin appears nicely toned, and has nice smooth surfaces. With regards, Eduard PS- if the pics are not clear enough, i will be glad to post some more.
Well what I read on heritage was that the arrowhead was below U in United for a JR-1, looks like yours is past the U. So I think it is a JR-2 - I am by no means an expert, but just used heritage as a reference. Nice coin by the way.
I checked Bowers & Merena and it is definitely a JR-2! The identifying information for the JR-2 is below. "JR-2 is one of only two varieties dated 1801, and can be quickly identified by an olive leaf firmly embedded in the base of "I" in AMERICA. A prominent Die break (as struck) on the right Reverse arches from the rim above "E" to the shield. Tiny raised specks of die rust are present in the obverse field, mostly at the right. It is reported that only about 33% of 34,640 total Dimes struck in 1801 are of this Variety." Another beautiful and rare coin! Thanks for sharing! Frank
Thank you all so much for your trouble and help. This made my day, really. JR-2 no less! I only picked up on it because my wife asked me to take the coins to the bank, and before doing so i wanted to take pictures of some pieces. And this was one of them. This way i can still view them. I really should learn how to consult the available sources for information like this. I will take a look at the Bowers and Merena site. Once again, many thanks for your help guys. PS to answer Jack Lipos question about the areas i concentrate on. Basically the early period from 1793, ending roughly around 1830. I like all series the same, but maybe the early coppers a little more (cent of 1794 for example). Another era i am captivated by is the civil war period 1860 to 65. Regards, Eduard
