Are cuds and die chips considered errors? I have 2 different coins with cuds and 8 or so with chips. If they are I'll post some pics in the error thread.
Yes cuds are considered errors. There is a whole website devoted to them: http://cuds-on-coins.com/ Die chips are also errors but for the most part are not worth more than face or really all that collectible, though some are pretty cool.
I agree cuds are definately collectible. die chips are found on every day coinage. Their is a difference between a die chip and a retained cud though. Photos are always best.
Thanks. I have 5 of the peace medal nickels with chips. 2 with 1, I with 2, 1 with 4, 1 with 6 and 1 with 8. Love finding them
Neither seem to be listed on cudsoncoins. You could contact them and have them add your pictures to their database.
I just checked that site out for the first time. Very cool. I will contact them. No telling what the mint mark is on the 1912.
Can you get any close ups of the area? I say solder because of the way the rim expands in the area. The collar usually stays intact, therefore eliminating the expansion. It looks like added metal. What does the third side look like?
That is the first thing I thought when I saw the picture. It looks like it has raised metal on the rim that expands out from the rim which would definitely make it PMD.
Now that the Sailor Jerry has worn off, I am going to say that the barber is probably not a cud and like the othera have stated, is pmd. If it were a cud, especially one that large, you would see some type of weakness on the desin on the obverse where the cud is. Even small cuds will have that weakness in the design. Flip your 2001 over and I am sure you will see it.
I don't consider die chips or cuds to be errors, they are just continuing deterioration in the life of the die.
