I got this quarter in my change the other day. It appears to be missing some nickel on the edge.

It could be either partial missing clad.. Or even damaged.

I see the copper on the edge,
    at the reeding.

I've seen it before, and it might
be that the blank, and/or then as a
planchet, had some of the copper core
flaking, and then folded over the rim, on the outer portions.

This is probably from the upsetting machine that turns
the Type 1 blank into a 'with a rim' type 2 planchet.

    Interesting, but relatively insignificant.

Not a missing outer clad layer coin.

On the OP coin, can this edge copper be created post mint (grinding, etc.) ?

Not only haven't I seen any of these new Apostle Island quarters,
I am still needing a George Rogers Clark from November, I have a couple but the condition is not good enough. I just got a Pictured Rocks going through some rolls.
And of course no Voyageurs yet.

Thanks @Fred Weinberg for the explanation, I got a dime in change the other day that has the same copper rim but couldn't identify what it was. The coin definitely shows circulation damage but the copper rim didn't look like it was the result of damage. IMG_0001.JPG IMG_0002.JPG
