What causes this on the edge of a coin?

Looks like it took damage to the rim. Could have got nicked at some point during it's 74 year lifetime.

 

Never heard of damahe! Lol

 

Couldn't imagine PMD splitting the edge of a coin almost half way around a coin! Please explain!!!

 

Please take a picture of the whole coin and edge of the coin.

To me it still looks like a damaged coin.

Do you see the raised metal on the rim on the reverse side of the coin as shown in the screen shot?
It shows that the rim is deformed and took a hit outside of the mint. Your coin has PMD.
