I had the chance to visit Common Cents' Penny Harvest in Rockefeller Center this week. I got some pictures to share so you can get a better idea what it really looked like. It's obvious from looking that there are a lot more than just pennies in the collection. There was pretty minimal security. Some cops were around, but there was just a chain around the bin. I kept looking for people grabbing handfuls of pennies and running away, but didn't see anyone even touching the coins. If you live near New York City it's worth taking a trip in to see it.
No wonder the Mint has to mint so many cents. There are not enough cents in circulation because they are all on display in New York.
According to the newspaper, through December 31st. I think they'll start sucking up the coins with their giant vacuum cleaners on January 1.
Here are images of the bags kids use to collect the pennies. There are stacks of the bags at the display for kids to take home.
Nice pictures. Thanks. Hey - could you imagine selling that as unsearched lot. Or better yet having to search it yourself. That would probably keep someone busy for a few years.
