She posted the same inquiry twice, and included a picture with the other one. The moderators have been notified but for some reason they haven't dealt with the situation, and this one with replies stays active while the other one fades into history!
Anyone wanting to see a pic.---please see the other thread that is now closed. http://www.cointalk.org/showthread.php?t=31735 Speedy Moderator
well....it might have been because the Mod's weren't online at the time or didn't see the reported post as soon as it was sent. I didn't see the report and so your post was the first time I had heard of double threads Speedy
Can you give us some history on this coin? Like was it in your grandfather's coin jar from WW2? Or did you pick up the coin while on vacation in Africa? How was it aquired? It looks to have a bundle of six arrows on the one side, a shield on the other. Or a ships main sail.
Spanish maybe? The bundle of arrows appears on other coins from Spain, and the text on that side - well, if you think of a clock, from 6 to 7 that could be REG and from 9 to 10 maybe CAST. The shield looks similar to that of the Reyes Catolicos (Catholic Kings) here: http://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Imagen:Escudo_Reyes_Catolicos.png Vaguely yours Christian
Seems the text says REX ET REGINA ... CAST which would mean King and Queen of Castile. This page has a similar piece http://www.maravedis.org/rrcc_2realespag.html but I don't know much about such coins. An overview of other coins from those years is here http://www.maravedis.org/reyescatolicos.html (see the 1 real and 2 reales coins). Guess that somebody who is more familiar with these pieces can help you better - maybe after Christmas. Christian
I notice the font on that coin is 6 Flechas. Looks like you pretty much pinpointed it. Very good! I was'nt finding anything in my Krause world coin book since it only dates from 1901.
Thank for the help! I appreciate the help! No other coin forums page knew what it was. I did not have anything on it, because my coin book starts at 1901. I guess I will have to get the 1801 to 1900, unless you think that is older than that? Thanks for the sites chrisild.
First of all you need to figure out if it is genuine or not. I am not yet convinced it is. You can find pictures of all the various coins of the Reyes Catolicos on this page - Spanish Coins By King - and the coin you have pictured, while similar, does not match any of them. Now, that alone does not mean the coin is not genuine - but it certainly makes one lean in that direction. Can you provide us with more information and perhaps some better pics. The diameter and weight of the coin would be helpful.
I do not have a scanner, so that is about as good of picture as I can get. My scale is digital and it weighs in 2 gram increments. The scale reads 6 grams. The diameter of the coin is 24mm, but shows signs of being worn down.
Well, the weight increases the concern. The coin should weigh no more than 3.5 grams at most. But as you say, your scale is not the most accurate. If you take the coin to a jewelry store thay can weigh it accurately for you.
The coin exact wieght is 5.8 grams. Here are some more pictures. These might be better. I hope the coin is real, but if not why do they make replicas?
