I was pretty proud of myself from early April to around early June, the longest I'd gone without a new coin in the past 5 years. Then, this happened... LAELIANUS AE Antoninianus. 3.55g, 22.5mm. Colonia Agrippinensis (Cologne) mint, AD 269. RIC 9; Mairat 231. O: IMP C LAELIANUS P F AVG, radiate and cuirassed bust right. R: VICTORIA AVG, Victory running right, holding wreath and palm frond. I had to pay a pretty penny for a coin with a $10 reverse, but Laelianus has been on my want list forever, and this one had a crisp portrait, clear name, and most of its original silvering. When I saw it in the auction catalog, I had about as much restraint as Postumus's troops at the siege of Mogontiacum who had wanted to plunder Laelianus's city after it fell, and who then killed their boss when he refused to allow it. I also imagine them feeling a little guilty after the fact, but not so much that they didn't still enjoy the jingle of some new coins in their purses. Hmmm, maybe mine was one of those? As always, please feel free to share anything you feel is appropriate... coins of Gallic rulers, usurpers, coins you fell off the wagon for, etc...
Very nice new coin for your collection. I need a Laelianus and Marius to round out my collection of the Gallic emperors.
@zumbly , here is what I think you should do with that wagon you fell off of... Coins are good for you Z... don't fight it... give in to the dark side... I fell off the wagon for this Elizabeth I a few months ago.
That poor wagon! Anyhoo, I’ve since fallen off good and proper and now can’t seem to get back up . It was two months actually (Apr and May), but it sure seemed longer, and I'll now be making up for it with a vengeance!
"Fell off the wagon" eh? I am thinking that wagon is as mythical as the dragon in curtisimo's gif. Exhibit A: Seriously, though, what a magnificent acquisition. And who cares about the reverse? All the stuff that actually matters is spectacular.
AWESOME way to dive back in to the pool @zumbly !!! WOW! Nice one. These are hard to find. Congrats! I had been looking for one of these, and @John Anthony found one and offered. Could not afford at the time, but I bit hard, as I had been looking for some time! Yeah, it is his pic, but I will never be able to do better: RI Laelianus CE 269 AE Ant 19mm 3.4g Moguntiacum mint Radiate cuirassed Victory RIC Vb 9 p373 black I got my Marius a while ago. Not the best, but it IS a Marius: RI Marius 269 Gallic Usurper BI Ant CONCORD MILIT Clasped Hands
Haha, thanks, Sev... we had some fun with that . @Curtisimo needs to run us some new games! As for The Wagon, it is alas all too real, and the stuff of nightmares!...
I love that example of yours (JA did a great job finding it!) and it motivated me to redouble my efforts at capturing one. I really like the Marius too.
@John Anthony has been great helping me find right coins. I do my own searches, but he seems to have a much better eye than I do. It enables me to hunt for the wierd niche items that I really like. I am glad it helped you fall off the wagon! LOL, and at my pocket expense! What a mess this time period was... Here is the guy before him... Yeah, I really take cruddy photos. Congratulations @zumbly . This board is no twelve-step program; we are a bunch of tempters and enablers. Speaking for myself, I've fallen-off the wagon regularly for the past month. I put myself on a strict, no-coin diet two months ago. Been blatantly cheating since. Maybe hypnosis would help??
Don't try to fight it, @zumbly and don't worry! We'll let you know when we think you're going overboard! NOT!
Nice acquisition zumbly, great portrait. What looks like a flat strike doesn't seem to spoil the coins looks much.
LOVE that Wagon...vaguely familiar, but do not know it. This is always in MY mind when I envision the big wagon:
Well I hadn't ever heard of the guy, or if I did it was a brief mention not remembered. In any case, that coin is a nice addition and well worth falling for.
