I am looking at purchasing a 1859 Nicholas the first commemorative rouble. One thing I noticed about the coin was that it did not have a rim inscription that most 19th century rubles seem to have. Are commemoratives an exception to this?

It is very rare and rather expensive coin.

I would highly suggest to buy Uzdenikov's catalog. That would at least tell you the basics of what you are going to look at. Some were reeded, plain and inscribed.

Are you speaking about the 1859 rouble specifically?

    How much are they asking?

Does it having a smooth Rim preclude it from being authentic?
