I think it is a fouree. 29 mm 14g. Looks like winged figure on reverse holding something, so Nike? The obverse is a mess. Unfortunately I saw what I thought was a chimera and now I can't see anything else. It doesn't have the specific gravity of silver. Any thoughts please?
If you spin the first picture 180* it looks like a Corinthian helmet style ? Sorry Pish, that's all I have.
It is, or is patterned after, a coin of Side in Pamphylia. Spin the top picture 180 degrees and you'll see Athena's head facing right, wearing a crested helmet. The obverse is the usual Nike seen on coins of Side.
An example of a Side tetradrachm from CNG's archives. There are many slight variations of the reverse.
Its underweight with 14 gram , should be around 17 gram. Can you detect a copper core on the edge , I think I see some green stuff overthere. Here's mine with description:
Thanks @andre2 I told the seller it was unferweigun and likely an ancient forgery. It looked like a fouree to me. Love your example.
I thought it was a German word meaning underweight . It is totally believable as a German word (apologies to my German-speaking CT friends ) Fun fact from Google Translate: Unferweigun apparently means "inevitably" in Frisian. Per Wikipedia, The Frisian languages are a closely related group of Germanic languages, spoken by about 500,000 Frisian people, who live on the southern fringes of the North Sea in the Netherlands and Germany.
I have an AE version of that cool coin @Pishpash . Got this one from @Valentinian as small change for the Side Silver... Pamphylia-Side AE 15mm Minerva R - Nike L wreath Sear Grk 5440 SNG Cop 408ff
@Theodosius photos of the side of the coin are now on the updated listing eBay UK item number 323311819883.
Do we mean by ancient counterfeit what is known as "contemporary imitation"? Then I wanted to ask whether these coins were usually struck or cast. Thanks.
O wow!@TIF.. it did totally lQQk like a word and now it turns out it is!...i will unferwiegun use it now(i was going to anyway) @Pishpash you are a talented soul
I bought it shipped for under a tenner. I got it as a curiosity. Definitely a fouree, I knew it was underweight. I like these oddities.
