I don't wan't to break any rules...so I'm not sure how to go about this. Lots of members were helping me identify a coin which i was going to buy. After crunching some numbers, I find I cannot buy it now and want to share the details on where it is with them. How can i do that without breaking the rules?

ok, I guess it's okay since I'm not promoting for myself (yes, I re-read the rules)...This ad was on OfferUp, which has a very small following, and the only readers who stumble on to it are within 30 miles (unless they searched for the exact coin).
I had contacted him to see if it was a closed 3, he didn't know what that was. I told him it could be worth a lot more (or not). He said he didn't want to make the long trip to a coin dealer. He just needs the money. I'm assuming he lives somewhere around me and it's a 4 hour trip for me...so that's the deal.
    here's the ad: https://offerup.com/item/detail/495300216/
If one of you buys it and wants better pics 1st, let me know the contact details and I'll go get the pics for you since I'm close.

I would be very careful to weigh the coin and be sure it is real gold. Aliexpress has several 1873-S ( closed 3) $20 but most are brass. This has a bad smell to me. Did he say how he procured it? This is the website with 3 1943 steel cents for $1000. Use caution. Jim

Hi, I think that this and a lamp are the only things this guy has ever listed. Offer up is an "in-person" buy site too. Anyone who was interested in it would have to see it first. Offer Up even has the app that has you both meet at a public place.
I've bought numerous things on the app and it's always been on the up and up. We are out in the middle of no-where, so big city scams are quite rare out here.
Thanks for the advice! It is very much appreciated.

Buying raw classic gold is asking for trouble especially online.

It's in-person. Offerup is a "must pick up in person" app. I've used it a lot.

Okay, I know I'm new here, but why would he have to get it graded if he didn't want to? He is offering it at a good price, probably because he doesn't WANT to get it graded. I really don't understand why everyone is so sure he scamming.

Why wouldn’t you want gold graded to make it sell for more and with less hassle

I'm not him. I don't know him. I don't know why he wants to sell it. I don't know why he won't have it graded. And I won't ask. It's his business.

Hard experience, that’s why. My advice: Leave that coin for someone else. Run, don’t walk.

    just a FYI,
your first post above is exactly the problem (a-d) people are trying to help you identify.

The main problem with the coin industry is Fakes. Good fakes, fakes that look real that aren't. and attempting to no plunk down $1200 on something possibly worth essentially nothing.

    for instance ==> https://www.aliexpress.com/w/wholesale-20-dollar-gold-coin.html

so fakes are a plethora out there. People may buy them on eBay and then find out it's not real and try to sell it.

Who knows right? Which is the problem. With (a-d) you don't know.

But from another thread we know that you bought it. So we hope that it is real.

Many instances when ppl may get something from inheritance they don't know really what it is, how much it's worth or how to sell it. A precarious position to be in. More collectors need to put in their will/estate how to properly sell coins, etc. Until then, questions like your will linger on how real it is ...
