Here is a recent lion that I couldn't pass up. It's very different from the other Seleukid coins in my collection which show a profile view of a deity or a king. The Seleukids must have had a high respect for lions to put one on the obverse side of a coin.

The coin below the Seleukid is my other lion. I've posted him before with a different background.

    Oh, my! That's excellent!

    Great design and patina!

The Eastern Æ is really neat, too.

I think this is the same coin of the OP. SNG 1938.

Love your Lions @Deacon Ray .

I have none of either of your two.

However, how about a little old one?

That is a great Antiochos VII @Deacon Ray I love it. The obverse has such an expressive lion. I have yet to get any coins of him, and I would really like on of the bronze with the lion obverse.

Antiochos VII was the last great Seleucid ruler of any note, and reconsider Jerusalem and Babylon before his untimely death.

Nice one, DR, and lovely presentation :)

My first lion was this didrachm from Velia, purchased within the first few months of starting to collect ancients. I love the realistic rendering of the lion. It looks like it just gave a big roar and is walking away doing those grunting grumbling noises lions make, kind of talking to itself :D.
