Hi, Pish, I love your latest aquisition. That 'silvering' really shows it off. Very clear images. Good pick-up. I am also very impressed by some of the 'postings' by other members, too. (Mat's Eagle, and Dougsmit's Altar.) Very envious. I have more than 10 Claudius II coins and most of them are in pretty poor condition. If I post the best of them, you can imagine the rest. (1) CLAUDIUS II Gothicus-Latitia RIC Vi. Siscia 181 Antoninianus AE21mm.,4.22gm (2) CLAUDIUS II Gothicus RIC Vi. Milan 261 (3) CLAUDIUS II Gothicus (similar to) RIC Vi. Milan 261 (4) CLAUDIUS II Gothicus RIC Vi. Rome 111
Nice thread! Here's my favourite Claudius II portrait, an imitation Consecratio, and a Divus issue under Constantine:
I don't know if it's a good or bad thing to know I'm not alone in my dry spell of coin additions. Either way the day is getting closer that I should be able to resume collecting. If it wasn't for a CT member I would've gone insane by now. Love your Claudius II @Pishpash it's unusually nice for C II. Here is one of my favorites of the guy. Claudius II Gothicus. AD 268-270. Æ Antoninianus, 20mm, 3.0g, 6h; Rome mint. Obv.: IMP CLAVDIVS AVG; Radiate head right Rev.: SECVRIT AVG; Securitas standing facing, head left, legs crossed, leaning on short column, holding scepter // XI Reference: RIC Va 100, p. 218 From the YOC Collection Ex-JAZ
Way to break that dry spell @Pishpash !! How about a coin of Claudius II that isn't from Claudius II? Divus Claudius II Gothicus. Died AD 270, Struck under Constantine I (317-318) O:Laureate and veiled head right, DIVO CLAVDIO OPTIMO IMP , R:Claudius seated left, raising hand and holding short scepter, REQVIES OPTIMO RVM MERITORVM; SIS. RIC VII 43. Siscia mint. 17 mm, 1.1 g
Here is Claudius II arriving to Rome in 268: IMP C CLAVDIVS AVG ADVENTVS AVG, Claudius riding horse left, raising right hand in greeting, holding long transverse scepter in left. 21 mm. 3.41 grams. RIC 13. Sear III 11314 If you want to know what "ADVENTVS" means and more about the type, see my site: http://augustuscoins.com/ed/PROFECTIO/ADVENTVS.html
I will reiterate the sentiment of others here and say it's nice to have you back posting again @Pishpash Here is my humble Claudius II to add to your thread.
Wow! That Claudius II coin is so nice, it doesn’t look like a Claudius II coin! Haha... seriously though, I have a soft spot for CII, that’s a great coin!
The obverse makes this one... The reverse makes this one... Doesn't matter which side you pick with the next two, they're all awful... You just gotta love these Claudius II coins .
I have a couple of favorite Egyptian tetradrachms of Claudius II. Workmanship and artistry seemed to have improved in Alexandria during Claudius II's time. Claudius II tetradrachm year 1, /eagle; Emmett 3878 Claudius II tetradrachm, year 3, /Tyche standing left; Emmett 3896
Wonderful acquisition @Pishpash! Congrats!! And like Aurelian, a truly great emperor but due to his limited longevity of reign doesn't get the play he should. @TIF, LOVE the provincial Claud deuces! That 1st one looks very much like Claud 1 (and has a BEAUTIFUL reverse!). Here is my schwaggy addition...
