I'm going to try to post one coin each day about something fun. Feel free to add to the thread with something related. This one is in memory of @rlm's cents. I'm sure some remember Richard. He passed a while back. Probably the best Lincoln guys to ever post on this site. His collection was massive. He really enjoyed collecting improper alloy mix/woody/wood grain cents. There are several threads on the topic, on CT. This coin reminds me of him. It's a bit unusual. It's a matte proof. Not something you see very often. If you have a woody, please post it.
Quite honestly. In almost fifty years of collecting I was never introduced to “woodies” before joining CT. I have long owned the two center below and had assumed it had been partially cleaned. After learning about woodies here I studied the piece closer and this washed appearance is consistent throughout the piece. So I have reconsidered my opinion and now deem this one an official “woodie”...... Apologies for the photographers lack of skill.
Love Matte Proof Lincolns. WL has the best set ever put together, imo. His 1914 is the finest example I've ever seen, ever.
