So I got this nice and rare thin type elephant of julius caesar love to know what you guys think. April-August 49 BC. 18mm, 3.71 g, 12h Military mint traveling with Caesar. Elephant advancing right, trampling on horned serpent / Emblems of the pontificate: simpulum, aspergillum, securis, and apex. Ref: Crawford 443/1; CRI 9; Sydenham 1006; RSC 49; RBW 1557. Good VF, toned, a few light scratches on obverse. ex D. C. Kopen Collection. Ex Classical Numismatic Group 58 (19 September 2001), lot 1032.
A nice example for sure I would qualify it of "sought after" rather than "rare" though. I would love to have one to twin my fat elephant example (did I ever show it off ?) Julius Caesar, Denarius Italy, c.49 BC CAESAR, elephant walking rigth, trampling on snake No legend, Simpulum, sprinkler, axe and apex 4.05 gr Ref : HCRI # 9, RCV #1399, Cohen #49 Q
A great looking elephant. That is a good strike on both sides with good centering. Great coin. I would like to get this type someday. John
Thanks Guys . @Cucumbor the reason I said rare is most examples I see online and in auctions VCoins etc are fat elephant such as yours but this variety I have seen quite rare By the way good to know is I did XRF on this and it had 99% silver and 0.4% gold having gold for me in silver coins is a good indication for authenticity. I was a bit surprised to see 99% silver its quite high for ancient technology but hey, don't underestimate J.Caesar he might have found a way
