    So you can see the more modern "COPY" stuff, Here's a collector website of a more modern coin copier who also produced the early dollar coins. Though, started in 1992-2006 they have a COPY stamp on them as you can see in pictures.

    Steam coinage didn't begin until 1836, so there weren't any reeded edge coins struck in the US until then. The third side of a coin tells us a lot. Chinese counterfeit, and not in silver.

    Unfortunately the passed down through the family story has problems too. It may have been passed from your great grandmother to your grandmother to your mother to you, but this style of fake has only been around less than 20 years.
