Hello everyone, New to this community. Can some experienced members give me their opinion on this coin's authenticity?
Welcome to CT! Sorry to say, my very amateur opinion would be to pass on the coin if possible. If you are questioning it now, then you always will. I do as well. I don't like the bubbles nor the "soapy" looking texture of the coin. Though I would like to see the sides of the coin. Even if there is no seem to speak of I am still in doubt. My apologies if this is a coin you have already purchased.
Yes unfortunately I did purchase, but seller hasn't shipped yet. So I'm thinking of getting a refund.
Wait to see what some of the other more ancient ancient() collectors have to say. I have been fooled plenty of times and they have helped right my ship many a time. (I edited the 1st response to say welcome. This place is awesome and we're always glad to get more comrades in coins).
Thank you, I appreciate the welcome. I just want to make sure I didn't make an "oops" for my 1st ancient coin purchase.
Welcome! I am not an expert. It does not look authentic to me. I don't like it. Are you a new collector? New to ancients? Be careful on eBay...I'm assuming that's where you bought from. There are some very good sellers on Vcoins like Ken Dorney or Victor Clark, Civitas Galleries, Ancient Imports, FORVM Ancient Coins, Warren Etsy at http://augustuscoins.com...there are many more out there...jzcoins2012 on eBay. Good luck!
Yep from ebay. The seller has 100%positive reviews and is not on any of the stay away lists. Think I made my decision. I'll get my refund before this coin ships. Thank you.
Thank you everyone who replied to this thread. Your opinions and knowledge helped tremendously. Most importantly, I didn't throw my money away. Till next time!
If you're new to ancients, eBay is great for picking up low-to-medium grade late Roman bronzes in the $15 or less range. But if you're hoping to pick up more expensive coins like the Alexander the Great tetradrachm that you showed us, then I second Jwt708's advice. VCoins is particularly good because you can comparison shop, so you can get some idea of prices ranges and how condition can influence the price of different coins. Welcome to ancients. Sorry your first attempt turned into a hassle.
Best to buy from reputable sources. Many were already listed above. You’ll find a lot of great stuff just from those dealers. I’d also check www.bargainbinancients.com Brian Bucklan always has some nice affordables there. I’m about 1 year into collecting ancients. It’s a very rewarding hobby I hope you stick with it.
Thank you, yes I'm definitely sticking with it. I enjoy the history behind each ancient coin I read about. I'll check out that link. Thanks!
