Been in circulation but 5 is still visible!! Just contacted one of the only known owners and waiting for reply. Supposedly only 8 other coins are known
The problem you run into is that this CANNOT occur during the minting process. There are no other coins that use a crude, large five, so it can't be from a punch. If you look at the process for making the dies, it can't happen there. In addition, your "5" is recessed into the coin which means it would have to raised on the die. Not happening. It couldn't be on the planchet because pressure during striking would have distorted it as the metal flowed, plus I can't think of how it would be on a planchet in the first place. However, there are numerous ways a coin can be damaged after it left the mint, and it wouldn't be surprising if something happened that left a mark that looks like a 5. I'm not saying that you don't see something that looks like a 5. But, I am saying that whatever made that mark, it absolutely, positively did not happen at the mint. And that's what others have told you as well. And don't forget, just because it's listed on ebay doesn't mean it's real. Anybody can list anything, with any description. Unless it's authenticated, the seller has no more credibility than someone who lists a religious image burned onto a piece of toast.
If you make a claim that you have this / that or the other thing the Burdon of Proof lies with you. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pareidolia
Oh yea.. Haha I remember reading this story once.. Kind of silly. That's no misplaced 5 in my honest opinion. I think its a clash. I really don't think it worth thousands neither. There are other really dramatic major Mint Errors that are only worth hundreds. This seller is really exaggerate on its price.
You aren't this guy, are you? Posted a little over a year ago https://www.cointalk.com/media/albums/my-collection.597/
It's sad that people dream up stuff like this. It's even more sad that some sucker will come along and buy it. If telling the truth is rude, I'm sorry.
Well, if someone with similar pareidolia sees the imaginary 5 and buys it, then buyer and seller can both be happy. Win-win. Until the buyer tries to sell the coin to someone else who lacks the imagination necessary to see the nonexistent numeral.
Until a TPG grades it that way .. it doesn't exist. we had a a long drawn out discussion too about pixelation and of course, randomness pixels which may make one think they see a number. All thanks to those low MP microscopes and way too much cropping. I think I have a bunch of 66 dimes too I ran across the other day in my boxes.
IMO before things are said if you feel strong about it and I believe you do then go ahead and send it in no need in saying things that can't be reversed. JMO Dave
