I was recently attracted to this fine collection... ...even though coins from this period are well outside of my field of focus, I placed my bid and was delighted to win them at auction. As you can see the information cards display the trusted hallmark of JAZ Numismatics but I understand that the most recent owner (recent provenance) was our friend and ancient coin collector @Sallent . I want to commend Sallent for putting this great collection up for adoption! My apologies for the poor photograph!
Hey, @Deacon Ray ! Nice pickup...a bunch in one fell swoop. Is your Avatar pic of Arn, the Knight Templar? It was a fun series.
I was advised by my favorite college professor to strive to know all you could about something and something about all you could. Applied to coins, this means a specialty collection backed by a wide, general collection. You have a good start.
Thanks, @Alegandron ! Yes, it was a great deal! Also The character in my current avatar is a Knight Templar from the movie "Ironclad" Actually, I've never seen it.
Excellent goal to strive for! The Ancients Forum will probably see fewer Judaean coins posted by me and more coins from the surrounding kingdoms in the future. I think that I've taken the Judaean collection as far as I care to. I could go after the Bar Kochba Revolt coins but those are really outside of my area of interest currently (not to mention insanely expensive for choice examples ,)
You probably have a splendid Judaean collection, Deacon. But, sometimes, it does one good to let an area of interest rest and to expand into something else. Whatever your new venture is, I expect you'll be sharing results with us here. But if your "other" coins don't bring you much luck, you could always try a horseshoe !!!
Thank you, Bert! That's excellent advice! My logos, after all, say Biblical Kingdoms and not Biblical Kingdom. I modified my coin logo to reflect the diversity of cultures in the Levant.
And thank you, Deacon. You will, surely, broaden you knowhow of ancient coins in general. And nothing will prevent you from, to whatever extent, return to work on previous major interests. But, at present, you will be taking a well-deserved "holiday" from a very specific ancient coin study. - One of the dealers you recommended replied, a while ago, and I responded to his message. But, I haven't heard anything further, since. Patience is a virtue !!!
Congrats, DR! Glad to hear you might "spread out" a wee bit. We'll make an "eclecticist" out of you yet, perhaps.
That's a cool ancient coins "mix tape" you got there @Deacon Ray ! What do kids do now since you can't give the girl you dig a mix tape anymore? Just make her a Spotify playlist her something? Lame.
Ahh... the mix tapes. Mine were heavy on the Moody Blues and Beatles and such, with some '80s New Wave mixed in.
Thank you for the inspiration! You're the ecle-master. I'll keep it Roman, Seleucid, and Indo-Scythian for now. I have always liked Seleucid coins.
