Hopefully this one will fill my fetish of Mt. Argaeus coins.. for the moment anyway.(of course, i'm bidding on another as i type) It does fill the gap for Lucius Verus, whom i didn't have till now. He was the 1st of the co-emperors of Rome, when, with the death of Antonius Pius, his adopted brother Marcus Aurelius refused the senates offer of becoming sole emperor and insisted on ruling jointly with Lucius. His natural father was Lucius Aelius Caesar Ae Lucius Verus/Mount Argaeus Cappadocia Caesarea, 161-169 AD 19mm/7.12 gms POST YOUR COMMENTS AND COINS PEEPS!
This is the matching didrachm dated only by ΥΠΑΤΟC Β. I see your bronze has ET B (year 2) in exergue.
Lovely coin @ominus1. Mt Argaeus was rendered a bit differently by the Flavian engravers at Rome. Vespasian AR Drachm, 3.04g Rome mint (for Cappadocia), 73-74 AD RPC 1636 (6 spec.). My only Mt. Argaeus. I want more of them and still trying to adjust to the move and the new job ( been years since I worked 2nd shift). I lost a lot of my photo files, so eventually I will be retaking a lot of pics. This one came by way of Saturnalia last year. Year 2 didrachm, like Doug's, but with a different bust and reverse depiction of Mt. Argaeus. LUCIUS VERUS AR Didrachm. 6.64g, 21.4mm. CAPPADOCIA, Caesarea, AD 161-166 (Cos 2). these are very nice examples..i think it neat the the Mt. is so varied on the coins..and youse that haven't any yet you will when you decide to, i didn't either but made it a mission last month for me.. thanks for the kind comments all, and that info @dougsmit
Verus was Consul II in 161 and Consul III in 167 so coins marked Consul II (B) could be 161 to 166. The OP AE ominus showed was marked ET B so it should be limited to that single year. I do not know when Caesarea started their new year. When researching, remember these coins were from the Caesarea in what is now Turkey not the one in Israel.
congrats, alway nice to see this mountain CAPPADOCIA, Caesaraea Hadrian 126-27 AD Mount Argaeus Reference. RPC III, 3148; S 239; Stumpf 588; Issue Secundus Year 11 Obv. Thanks for the correction - I got myself muddled when I hastily typed Year 2 instead of Cos 2 . I have a Year 3 AE.
Nice LV and Mount you have there, @ominus1 ! I don't have a Mount Argaeus (yet), so I'll post another LV. Lucius Verus, Co-Ruler with M. Aurelius, AE27 Dupondius, Struck 163-164 AD, Rome Mint Obverse: L AVREL VERVS AVG ARMENIACVS, radiate, cuirassed bust right. The inner white face, and the outer black face. I'm almost sure. I can see the 2 eyes and mostly the 2 noses ( in and out). Please try also to look at the inner white mouth. It might take you 2 or 3 minutes to realize this, but at last you'll be sure.
Great history and wonderful coins of Argaeus (modern day Mt. Erciyes in Turkey). Thank you. (Not my pictures, but a current visitor.)
