Once again, you've got to be careful when buying on ebay. Here's my scans vs. his photos. Please grade. His AU-BU. Mine ?
XF details. No grade due to damage (large gashes in reverse rim). The good news is that the coin turned out to be gold instead of silver (or at least that what it looks like in your scans).
Those don't look like rim dings, those look like test cuts. Somebody, at some point, thought that coin was counterfeit. I agree - return it.
My scans are the silver ones. I'm not going to bother returning it as it wasn't a very expensive lesson to learn. But, I did leave him (shoaf1953) neutral feedback with criticizing remarks. He left positive first. Oh well. Bruce
Why ruin the coin? If someone was interested in buying the coin in the past then why would he ruin it by purposely cutting into it? Twice?
Test cuts were typcially made by a merchant when someone was trying to spend the coin - not buy it. You need to always remember, these were circulating coins - people used to spend them.
I don't see the XF detail the rest of you are. I think it would have a tough time making VF. And with the edge cuts I'd save bullion value only. Okay, it's a '24-S Maybe a little bit above BV. If it were a stamp I'd label it as a "space filler".
I really don't see what you didn't see by his pictures. A scan will bring out every last imperfection (were you thinking a scan would somehow smooth out all the problems?), but I don't think you needed a scan to see the nicks, dings and scratches. Was pretty evident in the pictures IMHO.
I agree. There are enough dings, scrapes and nicks as well as wear visible in the original pics that it should be obvious the coins is not AU. That is one banged up Peace.
you could always call it a .......cull dollar....throw it in the silver pile....what is what I would do
Well, I obviously knew it wasn't a AU or BU but I just didn't take into account the severity of the rim dings. A lesson learned. Bruce
The ding on the top as well as the severe ding at 3 o'clock look much worse in your pictures. Obviously you knew there were issues with this coin but I could understand how one might hope they were not as bad as they turned out to be. Those gambles on eBay often turn out out to be ones we would never make in person! As you state, it wasn't an expensive one and sometimes it's good to learn exactly what a crafted picture can hide. Sharing the hard lessons for the benefit of everyone should be appreciated by those who might make the same mistakes in hopes of scoring a cheap buy! Thanks for sharing your experience with us! Darryl
With a chunk of metal removed from it you had to KNOW it wasn't AU. So if he claims that, everything else has to be suspect. Ruben
