I don't know if that's them. I don't think it is. I heard them talking one day about how they buy other people's Ebay accounts so they can start off with lots of positives, although I have no idea if they are still on Ebay....

"Anyways, I've had some previous problems with them before, such as them selling me coins that were cleaned when they didn't warn me about it (I was younger) and much of their coins are overpriced"

How did those prior "problems" get handled and/or resolved? It sounds to me as if the poor behavior of the people in the shop might have been related to the past transactions/problems.

Damn, that experience was terrible! It made me mad reading that!! I say you make that store's life miserable. Petition outside, protest, whatever, they need to learn a lesson!

Treashunt - Agree 100%. I guess my comments were intended for the more general case of the coin shop.

So first, the way the OP described the situation, the coin shop is dysfunctional - they need to see Dr. Phil. No question.

On a broader front, it costs a LOT to maintain a shop. And of course, you have to invest in your future (YN's or even just people off the street). After all, it IS a business.

I see threads on CT where people are saying that they can't even make money on e-bay!!!!! What the HEY! What would happen if instead of the 5% fees of e-bay and paypal, they had a $1000 rent bill every month and electricity and insurance and so on and so forth.

I am NOT a coin dealer and I do not have any stores, but I appreciate them. I'm in the backwoods here and try to frequent my coin dealer and buy something - junk silver, bargain bin, extra 2x2's, whatever. I can't keep him in business by myself, but I literally throw my "two cents" into his operation. And YES, I have gone in there and been treated like gum that was caught on your shoe sole - but the next time, I'm the Prince of Prussia!

And to be honest, most times, I pay more than if I were to get it on the Internet. But I like going there. I like having a place to spend an hour around things I like. And nothing is free - you pay for it one way or the other or else it disappears.

But, once again, the way the original situation was described, the coin shop has some issues..........

Point of long post: I'd rather have a rude coin dealer than no coin dealer at all.

Mark,Those previous problems never got resolved....For instance, I bought a Morgan a while ago, probably about 4 or 5 years. Turns out it was cleaned and overgraded and more expensive then the coin should have been if it had been graded properly and uncleaned....But as I said, that was a while ago. I might not even have the coin anymore.

Another time in which I was taken a bit was when I had a bunch of the Godless dollars. The owner of A-Coin wanted a few to sell with his unopened boxes on Ebay. They were selling for $100-$125 a piece on Ebay and the owner explained to me how common they were and how he was helping me out by taking a few off my hand. he pretty much wouldn't let me leae until I sold him a few (I don't remember how many) for $45 a piece....He made it seem like this was a good deal at the time and I thought perhaps he would be a bit kinder to me when I came in in the future...but....there ya go.

    -Paul

Oh, and I'm sure he sold them for a pretty good profit on Ebay....=/

I'm sorry to hear this all. I'm (barely) a YN myself. I've ran into a few problems like this at flea markets and such. Not nearly as bad as this, only a general sort of disrespect. Sadly, I can't flash a wad of cash, because I usually don't have one. But I do usually turn out knowing more than the dealer, and that bugs them even more.

I hope everything works out okay for you.

Before these recent problems did you happen to leave a bad taste in someone's mouth there? or hassle/haggle them over a price?

Even as a dealer I have been in store where employees/owners have not been friendly...it is no big deal it isn't worth bad mouthing them its just time for a new coin shop to visit. It might be a blessing maybe they got better deals anyhow

KomkaCoins is right on this one. A lot of jewelry stores have that feature as well as armed guards. Think about it. A decent volume shop has a lot of money tied up here - as much if not more than a branch bank.

Staff and customers deserve a little safety.

Buy a bunch of $^&# , dump it on Ebay, yeah, thats awesome, just what we need !!! LOL, it is SOOO tempting these days, but I see it all the time.

As for local shops, like PocketChange has said, I go to mine just to shoot the breeze, and always pick up a few supplies, even if not needed. Keeps him happy, keeps me in touch, and it goes without saying that having a local guy on your side is good.

Hey, I just thought of something.......consignment

You should come down to St. Augustine for coins. The 2 true coin shops we have are very kind. One has a nice selection but the prices are just OK, the other has great prices but he does not carry a books of just one series. He has nice unique and hard to find pieces if you catch him at the right time and he has new stuff all the time.

I may be swimming a bit against the tide here... but...

First off, I agree that there's no real excuse for bad behavior regardless of any possible explanations. However...

The above sounds to me like the coin dealer in question is already turned off to you. I suggest that you're being vividly remembered as someone who didn't buy into the theory that you should sell your "godless" dollars for way under the going rate and that you weren't grateful that they were doing you a favor.

Since you didn't buy in to the scheme without an argument, could be you've already been written off as a "problem customer." It could be that you'd go in flashing $1000 bills and you'd still be treated as an unwanted nuisance.
I would not be surprised if they believe it's better for business if you don't come back, ever. I think you won't have a problem with that after this latest event.

What was not being counted on was the number of people to whom you'd describe this incident. But I can tell you that if it were me, the one bad experience with the cleaned overgraded Morgan would have been "one strike, you're out". There are too many alternatives available for me to be interested in giving the dealer a second chance. I do the same thing with model railroad shops, by the way, and I think coin stores exist at between a 5 to 1 and 10 to 1 ratio to model railroad shops these days.

As far as the "Letter to the Editor," though-- if I were the editor, there is no doubt that I would not print it. It would sound too much like someone with a personal ax to grind, with unverifiable information (sorry, but it is a "you said, he said" here). And it would possibly expose me to actions I'd rather not have to defend myself against. (It doesn't matter who's right, it's who has the deeper pockets.) The coin dealer did not actually defraud you, which might perk up someone down at the Daily Blab. He refused to serve you, which is technically his right. Stupid, probably; resulting in lack of business, yes; but illegal, no.

In general, the comment about how you are dressed is one with which I completely agree. I thoroughly enjoy "big ticket item" shopping whilst dressed like a slob. It keeps the commission-based sales staff far away.

I went to that same shop yesterday and asked to see some graded Morgans and was showed a couple of shoe boxes full of them.As soon as they were put on the counter I turned around and left.
I have had a couple of bad visits there myself, tried to sell me a 1990 MS 69 silver eagle for $150.00 LOL LOL,but this takes the cake with what happened to you Paul.Just goes to show you that people don`t always "read the book, only the cover".
See you at the FUN show and we can spread the word.
I showed my Morgan collection to a dealer,108 coins all graded PCGS,NGC with a MS 62 average and he offered me $30,000.00 for all of them.I cosigned with Heritage for the FUN show,16 of my coins should bring in around $40,000.00
    What a dealER

Paul, I wasn't able to call them yesterday or today, I was pretty busy, sorry man, but if they are open tomorrow I will give them a call, or after the holidays. I know exactly what I'm going to say though. :D And no, it isn't going to be a conversation where you wouldn't want a 3 year old to repeat you. :D Sorry about taking so long to call man.
