Coin of the day #3.

    I'm going to try to post one coin each day about something fun. Feel free to add to the thread with something related.

    This is actually a token and not a coin. From 1837 to 1848 the US Mint did not make half cents for circulation. They were needed in commerce so businessmen got together and made many different designs. For some reason, Red Book list this one along with the other half cents. There is a lot of cool history behind these designs.

    This Feuchtwanger Token was made in the same year.

    Those are really cool. Made in three cents as well. Congress said no to the metal. It was copper, nickel, zinc, tin and something else.

    Small change was a real problem in those times. That brought in what we call Hard Times tokens today.

    I believe this one falls into the hard times token category.
