I have always wondered about the details of the medallion issues. How many examples were struck? Making the dies would be a lot of work but worth it if you were making a thousand or a hundred but what would be the use of a hundred 20 solidus pieces? I assume they were distributed to senior officials and melted down by their heirs but that does not explain all the bronze medallions with no great melt value.
