Rumor has it that the U.S.Mint made some 40% silver peace dollars in the year 1966, I have heard about it through family members of friends but have seen no proof of the 40% silver dollars so I was wondering if any of you have the proof?
Your story is a little mixed up, don't worry. Hang out here for a while and folks will chime in and give you facts, like the post above.
From what I was told the basic story is in 1966 some 40% silver Peace dollars were made but were destroyed shortly after and there is no record what so ever of them even existing in the first place.
I think this may be just a rumor, although it would be cool if true. The Coinage Act of 1965 forbid the coinage of silver dollars for five years. I believe there was some discussion of the circulating Ike dollars being 40% silver but they ended as clad.
A friend's uncle told me the story in the 90's but I wonder myself how much of it is true because there is no actual physical evidence of this happening.
I now about the 1970 clad Peace dollars but have never heard anything about 1966 40% silver peace dollars. As Topcatcoin pointed out they would be illegal to produce unless the law was changed, and even by 1966 I'm sure the mint knew the 40% halves were going to fail so what would the point be of striking 40% silver dollars?
