I recently found an 1837 Mexican (Mexicana) Silver Dollar (and other coins) while detecting a pioneer site. I havent been able to find much info on this dollar. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

There was an 8 reale coin minted from 1824 to 1872 in Mexico. It has "Republica Mexicana" on the side w/ the eagle, and the libertad cap with rays on the other side.

This coin was minted at 14 different mints but most were made at Morelos (Mo), Guanajuato (Go), or Zacatecas (Zs). These mint marks can be found on the right side of the coin on the cap and rays side.

Greetings Dave; there appears to be a M to the right of the date, is this the mint mark??

My reference book shows the mint mark at about the 3:00 position on the reverse. It looks like there is some other writing between the date and the mint mark, That's assuming you have the coin I am describing.

The mint mark for this coin is located at approx 7 o'clock.

    ILROB -

I moved this thread over here too as it was getting confusing trying to go back & forth between the 2 Forums.

Now you say your coin has an O at 7 o'clock. I wish to be clear on this - I will explain later. Please view this picture - LINK

Do you see at the bottom left the legend starts off with a star then 8R then a dot then G then another dot then the date ?

Well the G is the mint mark for that coin. Is the O on your coin in the same position ?

After looking under magnifacation I now rule out the O and believe C or G with leaning more towards the C // The mintmark is right against the lines along the rim // Will keep looking // The coin isn't in the best shape being it was in the ground most likely well over 100 years // Tried to send a photo but it failed to send, will try again. Thanks for giving your attention.

The best I can tell is 8.R.C. 1837 M What does the M represent??

The M would be one of the assayers' initials - typically there are 2 assayers, but not always.

But I think this coin is either so worn that that the legend cannot be seen or it is a counterfeit. The reason for this is the combination of date, mint mark and assayer's initial that you have relayed. There was no 8 reales struck at any of the mints that matches the C mint mark with the date of 1837 and an assayer's initial of M.

There were however coins struck on that date with the letters you provided being used as part of the legend. For example - the mint could be CA - but not just C. The assayers' initials could be M J - but not just M for coins with a date of 1837.

So unless you can post a pic of this coin - that's about all I can tell you.

The pioneer site that I found the coin at also yielded a 1848 large cent and an 1853 seated dime along with several coin buttons and musketballs so it would have to be a very early counterfit. Having trouble sending pictures. Do you have a Email address that photos can be forwarded to??

What you call very early counterfeits are the most common. You see, contemporary counterfeits, those made at the same time as the genuine coins were circulatiing, were made for one reason - so people could spend them. And they are quite common.

But if you can email me a pic - I would be happy to post it for you ;)

    Hi ILROB,
My name is Jude and I am from Barbados. Strange enough, I found that same type of coin in Guyana some years ago. On that site I also found buttons, smaller silver coins, a 1818 cent, very old bottles, bone pipes, an ink jar with pen, a sword, beautifully painted ware plates etc. What I found out about the buttons was that some of them were indian because of the elephant mounted on them. I cant remember what were on the other, but a professor from Canada took the buttons and told me he would send back the information on them, but he never did. And I never got them back. Right now I have lots of coins but some of them might have some value.. thing is I am in the Caribbean and it is hard to get anyone to appraise them. I can be reached at judek6@hotmail.com Please write me a line.

    Hi ILROB,

I forgot to give the date... Mine is dated 1837. And it's not in too bad a condition for an old coin.
