The US Mint would not replace the letter L with a letter I.. Could be one of two things. A damaged L or a bit of struck through grease issue. I have seen plenty of Cents such as yours. Nothing major. Not a fake as your poll asks.. just a real Cent with a minor issue.
Thx Dave. I thought about it being damaged or wore out however I have other pictures which u can clearly see do distictive marks that would make me think that there was a missing part of the L there before.
I understand but the L missing appears to be greased filled I have seen many of them as far as gabe9991 telling you to send it to grading company I think it would be a waste of money. But as always it's your choice but even @paddyman98 Told you your coin is damage he has 31 years so you decide. JMO Dave

FYI, there's not a guy at the Mint, individually pressing each penny. The die itself isn't being changed on each penny allowing for an individual error. There are about 30 million pennies made per hour / 1,040 per second (internet numbers). Grease is used to help the metal flow. sometimes all that grease flows into a device, such as the "L" and partially fills it upon being pressed. Since the grease has no where to go it doesn't allow metal to flow into it fully shaping the letter, thus you get a partial "L" or partial some other letter.
@IOrtega Please ignore this suggestion. You have received responses from some knowledgeable collectors indicating it's a minor filled die error (and I agree). Errors like this are fun to find, but they do not add any value to the coin, especially one in circulated condition. It IS NOT worth paying $50+ to have it graded. The coin is worth face value. Even knowing it has a low value, I would keep it if I found it in change.

You might have sold worthless coins. To less then knowledgeable people but im sure your coins were not graded. That coin is a dime a dozen. Shame on you!!!!!!!!
Thanks for the information. To tell you the truth I have collected coins since I was very young never with the intention or knowledge of its value. If theyre is anything different about it then it has my attention. Last week I decided to sort them out and that coin was the first one I picked up. So I was curious.
