Nice specimen that has seen only a few months of circulation.

These were horded by the millions and they are still drifting back into circulation.

    Why were they hoarded?

Back in those days "moderns" were the most widely collected of all coins. The coin market largely consisted of countless millions of young baby boomers and everyone expected them to buy modern coins going far into the future. They saved these rolls for profit and future collectors.

Nobody anticipated the government would work to kill these markets and even the underlying collectability of the coins beginning in 1964 with the first date freeze. The modern market collapsed in a heap in '64/ '65 and the coins that had been saved have been trickling back into circulation ever since.

You'll rarely see later issues in nice condition because these were never saved at all except for most one cent coins and some nickels.
