Boy Howdy - you don't want me to start posting pics then. You'll be be swept up by the darkside so fast it'll make your head spin
Ummm, yup. Those are gorgeous! The French earned their reputation for beautiful creations. The lady in the center seems to be a close relative of Miss Peace dollar, or perhaps the aunt of Miss Mecury dime. At this point, though, my anti-darkside shields are holding Thanks for the posts! Mike
I shouldn't even ask this question because nothing good(for my bank account) is going to come from it. Really, ignorance is bliss. If I don't know what it is, I cannot spend hours and hours scheming how to buy it. So, I just won't ask! ... ..... What's the "angel" coin? And the standing liberty? Thanks, Mike
Here's a beauty that I really like: I love world gold coins, I honestly think they are better looking than most US gold coins. Oh man, my wallet is going to be real sore when I am able to afford those types of coins. Phoenix
I like most US coins. No particular interest in a single set, just a hodgepodge of everything. I like them for the history and the unique designs. And to me, collecting in the VF to EF range lets me actually hold a piece of that history, instead of having just a collection of pristine coins that never saw a butcher's till or a 19th century paperboy's satchel. Guy~
Phoenix21, thats an even cooler coin IMO because the country no longer exists. It split from Nigeria, and after the civil war, Biafra lost and was swollowed back into Nigeria. I work with a guy from Biafra, and fought in the war. he doesnt like to talk about it much, not that i blame him. Not sure if the country not existing anymore would lessen the cost or increease it astronomicaly...
All we gotta do is reel him in now The angel is an 1848 French 20 francs, gold, first year of production post revolution. The standing liberty is a 1917 French 2 francs, silver, known as the sower design. Here are the reverses for each of those two -
Im a fan of BU Lincolns, Mercurys, Walkers and Standing quarters. I have a full set of Mercurys minus the 16D and most are in high grades. I have the better part of a set of Walkers. I have a set of mostly VF to Xf Wheaties missing only 4 coins, and I had big plans on starting on my Standing Quarters, But ended up starting on the BU Wheaties instead. Anyhow, It would take forever to get to the point where Im done with the BU wheaties, so I might start on the Standing Quarters anyhow. Ive never been into anything besides US coinage, but Ive been doing alot of looking at the Austrailian Kookaburras lately. I really like the looks of those and I think I might just start collecting them as well. They change the design every year, plus they are 2 ounces of silver. So that has to be a nice silver coin to hold.
I like to collect tokens as I enjoy their extreme diversity. There is a token with nearly any topic or graphic depection theme that one can think of. Most communities have/had token issuers, so there is the local appeal factor as well. For those who like odd denominations, just to mention a few are 87 1/2 cents, 6 1/4 cents, 12 1/2 cents, 30 cents, 1/4 cent, and some non monetary values such as good for a smile, a tune, 6 sticks of dynamite, 5 chickens, and on and on.
I lover every series I bounce to, mostly for historical reasons, but some for the beauty of the coin itself.
I started to bite the bug on overstrikes and unusual world coins. There are just too much to discover. One of the most unusual coins is this: Russia 1757 1 kopek overstruck on Swedish 1 ore coin Russia and Sweden weren't at the best terms - perhaps even so up to today.
I enjoy collecting modern US coins. I like mint sets, proof sets, The prez dollars and yes even the state quarters :rolling:. I know a lot of people aren't impressed by the newer stuff but IMHO they are beautiful coins. My favorite coin is the Silver Eagle. They are big, beautiful and have some weight to them. My favorite rolled coin to search is the nickel. There are just enough things to look for to make it interesting.
Vicnrydr, Go for it!! One of the touchiest subjects is whether you are "collecting" or "investing" or both. If you are truly just COLLECTING - go for what you like and to heck with the rest of them. Unfortunately, there are far fewer threads about modern coins than older coins. One of the nicest things about modern coins is that you can get them at face value!!! Keep searching those nickels. Me I like modern sets 'cause I can complete them and AG/G4 of the late silver sets 'cause I can complete them!!!
This week I like type 1 standing liberty quarters.... Last week it was something al together different...
I agree ~ same reasons. I also enjoy that most world coins are more affordable than US collection coins. I like that I can hold hundreds of years of world history in my bare hands simply by dipping my hand into a 'world coin' bucket at a shop or show.
