Should I crack this 1883-CC MS65 (NGC) holder and submit raw to PCGS?

I've seen 66's not as nice as this. Barely any chatter and superb luster. The cheek is very clean and pops out at you. I believe is definitely under graded. I'm not one to usually gripe with grades for the most part I find my submissions very accurately graded.

I'm a PCGS member and am thinking about either sending it in for crossover, or cracking it open and sending it in raw. I'm not quite sure how crossover works (e.g. can they designate a higher grade on crossover?). Regardless, I feel like the coin would be more likely to grade 66 if submitted raw than if submitted crossover.

See pics below! Thank you in advance. Note between 6-8 o'clock on the obverse is a scratch on the holder, not the coin.

You can state the minimal acceptable grade for crossover. If PCGS doesn't think it meets the minimal grade, it stays in the NGC holder. Sending it in raw is a risk. It may get a lower grade, may get a details grade, or even come back in a body bag. My approach for NGC coins that won't cross at the grade I want or better is to sell them and buy a PCGS-graded coin in the grade I want.

Sending in raw coins can yield surprises ... good and bad. I recently sent in a Morgan from my wife's uncle's stash. It was an end coin in a roll that had been put away in the 50's or 60's. It was nicely toned on the exposed side. Came back as AT, which is impossible. So, it'll get dipped and regraded.

why not send it in to CAC? If it gets a gold bean, don't even get it regraded, its worth more with the gold sticker.

This is just me being a bit paranoid but PCGS and NGC are at odds with each other.
Sending a coin in for a crossover could easily result in a downgrade.
So make sure you specify a minimum acceptable grade.
If you submit it raw ... well, others have covered that.

To my untrained eye it looks a 65 to me, but no higher. Members with more knowledge than I may disagree. Good luck though, I hope it grades higher for you.

    That's not a 66 IMO.

In my humble opinion, it is correctly graded in that NGC holder. I would enjoy it as is.

Yes it can, but it's rare since they're grading through plastic you get their most conservative grading.

It's unfortunate when you are paying for a professional grade, and instead you get an incorrect amateur opinion. (In regards to the NT/AT coin.) Now you have to risk dipping it, which may or may not work out.
In regards to the OP coin, I also agree with the grade. There's too much chatter for 66.
I don't doubt that you have seen 66's that you feel your coin is equal or better than. But with the grades tightening across the board, this might just be a waste of time and money. If you knew 100% it was going to grade 1 point higher, then it's worth it. I am not as confidant.

I agree with the current rating and the suggestion to send for CAC. What does your instinct tell you to do?

Forget dipping. Return it to the grading service with a written explanation as to the toning and ask them to reconsider.

You would just crack it and resubmitt it. A written explanation of toning will carry no weight, anyone can send any letter for that for anything.

Actually resubmitted it with request for them to conserve it. Will see what happens.
