If you study Roman Imperial coinage, particularly of the third century, you owe a lot to Giard, one of the preeminent French numismatists of the last 50 years. I encourage you to read the obituary written by Michel Amandry.

There are not many occasions when I have regretted not becoming conversant in French. Learning of this man and his career has occasioned that thought in me. He was a dedicated scholar and the kind of person one does not wish to miss entirely. Regrettably I can only know of him, but neither him nor the breadth of his work. For that I feel a sense of loss personally, but for his contributions a sense of awe that he was so dedicated to such pursuits.
