Think I'm gonna head on over to another forum where I don't feel like an idiot for posting questions and pictures as well as asking questions. For those of you that helped without passing judgement I really appreciate it and for those of you that didbtd, well it's cool... Enjoy. Rachel
I answered your questions truthfully to the best of my knowledge.. I hope you didn't take it the way you felt from me. I read from many new members that this is the best Coin Forum around. FYI.. You can't delete your CT account so you are welcome to return anytime you want Good luck Peace
I searched other forms before I joined here on cointalk and I will tell you that this is the best site for learning and the help people are willing to give. As with any online chat room rather it's coins or not you will always have those people that annoy you. But from what I have seen here is that newbies come on here and they keep posting coins that they find wanting answers. And most of the time they get it but they get upset because they don't want to here the truth and yes we get annoyed as well because they will not take the time to learn anything. They want us to do their job for them they're not serious all they are looking for is the big one. So good luck in your endeavors and I hope you find what you're looking for. JMO Dave
As in life, some people enjoy being arrogant jerks, putting people down, and belittling others. You're never going to escape it. There are a few on here who do this consistently. But other than those few, people on here are helpful and honest. It is a great forum to be a part of. Many have told me before I am wrong, or what I have is not an error, and posted jokes at my expense, mostly in good-natured fun. It will happen again I am sure. But there are so many good people here you will cut yourself off from. If you are the oversensitive, safe-space type looking for others to boost your ego in a judgement-free zone, this is not what this forum is for. Whether someone is mean or nice, what I really care about is if they are accurate. My advice for you is to do a lot more reading about different types of errors. Several times you posted DDD and PMD thinking they were true doubled dies that were often similar to your other finds and posts. By taking the time to read articles on the subject, you will gain a better understanding and not post so many non-errors that bring about the very criticism you dislike. Anyway, good luck to you. Pretty sure you will be back.
Hi Rachel. The area of this hobby you chose to learn is not an easy one. It takes time and a lot of study. No need to feel like an idiot. We have all been there. I think you have handled yourself really well here. Wish you the best.
I'm not an errors guy so I seldom respond to your threads. But I always read them hoping you finally landed that prize piece. I'll miss seeing your posts.
I'm sorry to hear this Rachel. I have always enjoyed your threads and replies, especially to the comments that are making you feel this way. You will be a loss to most of us. If I'm correct you will always be a member so come back anytime.
Rachel, I have never read your posts. I am not an error collector. Yes, some people like to be condescending. Fact of life. However, in our "old CT hand" defense, we get asked the same question over and over. Many times a person only wants "an answer", and not want to learn why. On a board devoted to teaching and learning, we can teach but only to those who wish to learn. The best dealers I ever met were grouchy old bastards when you first meet them. They are just tired of people wanting "an answer" without learning. However, if you showed them you were learning, were paying attention, they were the best instructors you could ever hope for. I do not know if this applies to you or not. Whether you stay here or go, remember the real joy of this hobby is learning more and more about coins. For error collecting, you need to become an expert in the minting process so you can know what true errors can happen versus simply damage. Whether we see you again or not, best of luck and I hope you continue to pursue the enjoy of coin collecting.
A truly fantastic reply, but take special care to read the excerpt above. I've found this to be especially true. Some of my good friends were dealers that started off as "grouchy old bastards" when I was a newer collector. I put in many years studying and researching my areas of specialty and now seasoned dealers and collectors track me down to get my opinion on a regular basis. Rachel, I have read many of your posts. Though I do not collect or specialize in errors, I know enough to cherry pick them and where to sell them. It's great to think you have found something and ask for help evaluating it. Many people here are willing to help, but realize this is a service many would charge for that you are getting here for free. It's important to be respectful with the frequency and seriousness of requests, because there are so many posts here from people who are obviously looking for a quick answer to make a buck but don't care to learn. If you demonstrate that you are the type of poster who is looking to gain knowledge to be able to evaluate coins yourself and are not just looking to get free answers, help will come. If not, at some point, people are going to feel like their time is being taken advantage of. Many of your posts have been fine, but I noticed you recently posted an entire album of 55 Lincoln cents asking for evaluation. I didn't respond to the thread (almost nobody did), but personally I thought that crossed a line. Having said that, I hope you do choose to stay and learn. This is a great hobby and the best forum for it on the internet.
