Machine doubling vs a true double die

    Machine (or mechanical) doubling is not actually made in the striking process. Once the die hits the planchet, the coin has been "struck". In the microseconds after the strike, the die starts to lift away from the planchet and slightly rotates or moves as it rises away.... that is machine or mechanical doubling. It has nothing to do with the die or the planchet .. it is from a loose key/lock/retainer holding the die in the retainer. Tighten it up and the "doubling" stops. In Herbert's books, you won't even find MD in the "striking" portion of the book.
