Could someone with more knowledge than me on Thailand coins help me with this? I have had this coin for years and have not been able to identify it. At one time I thought it was a Baht coin but it may be a Thai token or commemorative of some type. I am new here and if this is the wrong place to be asking please feel free to move or delete. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
hi fauto, I collect thai coins. On the front with the elephant there are how many stars? 4 right? A baht has 8 stars so this is a 1/2 baht. It has the reverse of a 1860 rama iv coin however these coins are silver, yours looks copper. One possibility is this could be a copper pattern.......you would need to send that in to NGC or PCGS or just a fantasy piece/fake. Note: I have seen some medals that resemble that actual coins these last few months, they look like yours but they were baht/2 baht in size.
Thanks for the reply. It has had me baffled for close to 8 years. Yes it has 4 stars and the center of the coin obverse is raised.
@fauto585 Compare your coin to a 1/2 baht silver. Looks pretty close. Could be a pattern.....you should give it a go and send it in. Get some closure and then hit me up if its a actual pattern https://coins.ha.com/itm/thailand/r...3=ViewItem-Auction-Archive-ThisAuction-120115
It's a bit crude and also appears to have remnants of silvering. Both of these pretty much rule out it being an official pattern. I believe it is just a modern novelty replica.
