After numerous smaller Siculo Punic Horse head coins, I finally managed to buy a big one: strange folded rim: compared to a smaller unit coin: * please show your Siculo Punic horseys
Nice catch, Andres! All of those bronze Punic horse heads seem to be a bit tough to find, especially with any details, and the dishekel version is harder to find. I have two Punic horseys... one full horse and one head. I've shown them both bunches of times but will always gladly show them again ZEUGITANA, Carthage early 2nd century BCE AE 15-shekel, 45 mm, 95 gm Obv: wreathed head of Tanit left Rev: horse standing right, left foreleg up; solar disk with uraei above Ref: Alexandropoulos J (2000) Les monnaies de l'Afrique Antique, 103; Müller L (1861) Numismatique de L'Ancienne Afrique, 131; Luynes 3782; Jenkins GK and Lewis RB (1963) Carthaginian Gold and Electrum Coins, Royal Numismatic Society, London, pl. 28 12 SICILY, Entella. Thats a big bronze TIF, it can compete with your Ptolemy hockey pucks Never knew the Carthagians made 'm that big. This is my biggest full horse , a mere 3 shekel The Heracles Melquart is still a mystery coin to me, as if Alexander the great occupied Sicily and issued coins overthere in Entella. MHSBM is usually translated as "" People of the camp"" (mercenaries employed by Carthago) @dougsmit , I think its a defect too.
Wonderful DiShekel and TriShekel @Andres2 !!! Somehow, since Carthage was so intertwined with the Roman Republic's History, I have several coins of Carthage: Some Denominations of Carthage (The Empire, not the Roman Colony): 15-Shekels: Created to help finance Carthage's HUGE Indemnities after the 2nd Punic war. Ironically, this was the War with Hannibal, but it was Hannibal recalled to Carthage to reorganize their destroyed finances. Great post, @Andres2 ! I think coins featuring horses are very beautiful. I own only one however and it's not of ancient Sicilian origin.
Nice!! 29 mm? That's sestertius-sized! And, as you can see from many of the above photos, the flans were cast before striking and what you see is the result of flan preparation--it's part of the fabric of these coins.
Hmm, I have 30 Siculo Punic coins, all have ""normal"" smooth rims , and the most I see for sale, have smooth rims too. The OP dishekel coin and this one are the exception: Siculo Punic Tanit - Horsehead - unit 20mm - 5 gram - folded rim I think these are planchets with a defect, wonder if Doug made up his mind.
