So i just bought this 2016 Gold Stand Liberty, and the reverse is full of these lines. I'm still new to coin collecting, and i have recently learned from a previous post about die polish lines. Are these die polishing lines as well, or something else caused by the die? The coin is graded SP70. So what are these? I appreciate you guys taking a look.
If they are raised on the coin it is die polish. Die wear would go in a radial direction. The smudges go across the coin. Make sure it's not a reflection in the plastic.
Thanks for the reply. They are definitely not a reflection in the plastic. They are not raised, so i guess they are not die polish. So what are they then? Is smudges the correct way of calling them? I have another gold stand liberty that doesn't have these smudges, so this bothers me a lot.
It would bother me also. Sell it and get another one. Without seeing the coin in-hand, I cannot tell. I have not seen this effect before after examining several dozen of these coins. Could be alloy toning is causing the streaks. If so, someone would love to own it!
I'm actually going to try to return it. This is the third coin i bought this year that had these marks. The first gold standing liberty i got didn't have these marks, and i have been trying to get another one that is as good ever since... Also these streaks are always on the reverse, so i don't know if it's toning that's causing them.
Suppose the only one they have to send you has also been returned or even worse, you my just get a refund.
Before things go too much further, can you state were you are seeing the smudges, or as you stated originally polish lines? I think what you are seeing is a later die state coin. If there were smudges on your coin it couldn't have grades SP70.
Hi, the streaks are to the left and right of the eagle. There is a little bit to the top of the eagle. I really don't know the correct terminology here, and i have tried my best to capture them on camera with my phone. The streaks are not raised or intruded, and yea... I would love to know your opinion on it.
I think what you are seeing is the slightest of Die Deterioration. This happens after the continuous effort of forcing the metal into the recesses of the design, it eventually decreases the sharpness of the center and works it's way out to the rim.
Looks normal to me... If anything, those are just normal die polishing marks or die deterioration. I wouldn't waste my time returning it if I were you.
Very Interesting. I don't recall ever seeing horizontal die deterioration. Anyone else have an example ON ANY TYPE of coin? Please don't post die cracks.
I don't see anything horizontal. I see a hollow effect around the eagle, can you see horizontal lines?
I see what he's talking about and where he's talking about but it just looks like faint hairlines to me. Based on the pics anyway.
It's all about "color." Light and dark (okay, slightly diagonal ) streaks. Look at the entire coin in the second image.
I see now, slightly? I have never looked one over in hand, so my further comments would be futile. Maybe they will tone and ARE from the alloys, I just read that they should be 22-24 kt gold so some impuritys will be present.
@Insider There is still the fact that a later die state is present, this could also be correct, after a die has been used X amount of times, it is called die wear, what ever caused it. until someone sees the exact reference in hand, it is only a guessing game.
