1979 D Lincoln Penny POSSIBLE mintmark error.

    It looks like this penny has a D stamped in the completely wrong spot. Instead of being stamped under the mint date, it seems to be stamped under the ST in " IN GOD WE TRUST "

    I say POSSIBLE because I have been going back and forth between it being a mintmark placement error or just a cud error... any opinions?

    Hi, @Janine Gomez .
    That is definitely not a cud - cuds are only on the rims of coins. It is possible to find a mintmark out of place on coins before 1990 (that was when they engraved them onto the master die), but that looks like normal damage to me on your coin. And, BTW, coins are not 'stamped', they are struck. This is what real ones look like:

    Just a FYI. I think it would be good for you to look up, what each mint state coin looks like. Mint state is uncirculated and what the intended design should look like. Doing that every time you think you have found something, will give you a better understanding of what to look for.

    You may also go to varietyvista.com as well google wexler coins two sites where you can look up variety coins . Most with images and explanation of said variety.
