message to seller (auction listing) ...

Saw something that looked good on ebay - actually one of those 'too good to be true' listings. I don't have Scratch n Sniff internet, but I swear I got a whiff of excrement.

Seller has 3,7xx + feedback. I checked WAY back, and found a couple non (+) 'hmmm's ', and sent a message to seller:

Any chance of getting a pic of the rolls in front of a mirror, to see other ends in same pic?

The one feedback "rolls put together by hand", was kinda' Yellow Flag - thanks.

I don't expect an answer.

Notice that the seller never says they are 'unsearched.'
Think about it...if you had the chance to get a ton of rolls, and opened a few up and found rare coins, would you just go and auction the rest off on eBay? And the chance of a DIME getting on the end of a roll is very, very slim which makes me think the seller probably wraps them himself. You can probably tell that this is one of my favorite subjects.

 

Sticking a dime on the end is a favorite trick.

 

Hard to believe people still fall for these seller scams.

 

Would not be willing to pay more than about $15 - 20

 

Sold at $18.80 per roll. Someone really wanted that group.

 

This is an old trick. I always stay away from these listings.

 

Why do people STILL buy these things? They are more obvious than the Nigerian prince that needs a $2000 shipping fee.

 

It's getting tougher and tougher to filter out the crap on eBay anymore. If they won't set standards for all sellers, it's definitely a buyer beware world out there. Good luck to all!!!

 

I was PARTLY wrong - I did get an answer.

Seller said it was too late to add photos (I think in last hour [or so], you can't edit).

TOld him fine, thanks; then suggested to him that he try to add 'mirror' photos in future showing both ends. He said he didn't need to, been selling them like this for years - "over 200 lots, 10-lot Wheat Rolls".

edit; just looked at his Completed Listings. Strange how many times a '16 Merc has showed up in the end of one of the rolls. He should quit wasting time rolling Wheats, and just buy a Lotto Ticket

 

Wonder why he doesn't throw in a Barber or an SL .10 in there?

Yeah - using a 1916 Merc dime and selling the roll for $60 - amazing how many dummies will pony up the cash in hopes of finding that little 'D' on the reverse

 

What good is seeing the other end of the roll going to do? It still doesn't tell you anything about what is inside the roll. We've even seen that done, a 09S lincoln on one end and a VDB on the other end. It's amazing what that does to the final bids. And then the buyer gets a 09S lincoln with a damaged reverse and a 1909 VDB after paying $400 for the roll.

Then you have those rolls of morgan dollars with say a MS 1881 on one end and a MS CC reverse on the other. The seller says nothing but the buyer infers that it might be a solid roll of 1881 CC MS dollars! The roll sells for 3 to 4000 dollars and the buyer gets a roll with a MS-1884 CC and 19 common date Morgans with at least on other MS coin and 1881 S from the other end. Value of the roll $400 to $600, seller makes $2400+ in profits.
